In 2018, Zerihun Wolde fought the ocean to save his daughter’s life. Last week, McLeod Law Group fought for justice on his behalf. Wolde, a dedicated father of four, drowned in a section of the Myrtle Beach shoreline that was supposed to have been monitored by trained lifeguards employed by Lack’s Beach Service. The company is contracted by the city to provide personnel in exchange for the right to rent chairs and umbrellas to patrons at a profit. Jurors decided that this “dual role” method of guarding prevented lifeguards from paying attention to the water at all times and cost Wolde his life. Wolde’s wife, Meswaet Abel, filed a wrongful death suit in November 2019. After a week-long civic trial in Horry County, the jury returned a verdict awarding Wolde’s family with $13.7 million dollars in actual damages and $7 million dollars in punitive damages.
